What is BDNF?

BDNF stands for brain-derived neurotrophic factor, a growth factor made in the brain. This protein helps nerve cells survive, grow and connect. Studies are investigating whether curcumin influences BDNF levels, so far with early and mixed results.

BDNF explained simply

BDNF is a protein made by the body that belongs to the neurotrophin family. It is produced mainly in the brain, for example in the hippocampus, a region important for learning and memory. You can think of BDNF as a kind of fertiliser for nerve cells: it supports their survival, their growth and the formation of new contact points (synapses) between them.

Many factors influence BDNF levels, including physical activity, sleep, stress and age. In research it is usually measured in the blood. How well blood values reflect what happens in the brain is not yet fully settled.

Why BDNF comes up with curcumin

In cell and animal experiments, curcumin increased BDNF production in some cases. One proposed link is that curcumin influences inflammation in the brain and oxidative stress, since both can dampen BDNF formation. A signalling pathway discussed here is NF-κB.

In humans the data are thinner. A few clinical trials, for example in people with major depressive disorder, tested curcumin against placebo, with improvements in mood symptoms. Evidence on BDNF levels in humans is not established by these trials. These studies are small and use different preparations, so no reliable conclusions for everyday life can be drawn.

What influences BDNF levels?

In observational and intervention studies, blood BDNF levels are linked to several factors. Regular physical activity is among the best studied. Sleep, chronic stress and age also play a role. Whether a change in the blood value actually means a noticeable difference in memory or mood is open.

Frequently asked questions

Can BDNF be tested?

In research it is determined in blood. As a routine value in a doctor's practice it plays no role, because no treatment follows from it.

Is BDNF a hormone?

Strictly speaking it is a growth factor from the neurotrophin group. In everyday language it is sometimes called a growth hormone for nerve cells, which is a simplification.

No health promises

A higher BDNF level in the blood is a measurement, not a health benefit. There is no authorised health claim for curcumin regarding brain, mood or memory. Mental health complaints belong in medical hands.

Curcumin

Curcumin is the yellow main active compound of the turmeric root: well studied, but fat-soluble and hard for the body to absorb.

Silent Inflammation

Silent inflammation is a subtle, chronic inflammatory process without clear symptoms. What lies behind it and what can be measured.

NF-κB

NF-κB is a protein complex that switches on genes for inflammation and immune response in cells. What it does and what is studied about curcumin.

Evidence

Evidence describes how strong the scientific support for a claim is, from cell experiments to meta-analyses.
